Life with an Infant

Before having Olivia, I often wondered what the HECK I would do all day with an infant. I thought I would be bored. Well, I am here to tell you I am NOT bored. I was bored. Well, I was "stuck" for a few weeks. Okay, lemme break this down. *Disclaimer- this post is pretty long*

Lil Mama is 15 weeks old here!

Weeks 1-4... Total blur. Foggy. My mom was with us for about 10 days over a 2 week span. I recently asked her, "What did we do all day?" I remember her cooking, cleaning, doing laundry, making our bed and food shopping... but I couldn't remember what took up MY days! She said, "You basically fed the baby and sometimes took a nap..." Then it all came back to me. The first month of nursing was SO time consuming. I needed pillows to prop her up and she nursed both sides for like 15-18 minutes. She would fall asleep while nursing so I would take her onesie off (which took me like 5 minutes because I was so new at all of this, ya know?) to make her a little uncomfortable so she wouldn't pass out. WILD. By the time I was done nursing the baby, she slept for an hour and then needed to be fed again. I was nervous to pump (I didn't want her to enjoy a bottle more than me) and let Bri feed her so I just did it round the clock. I remember NOT sleeping. My milk came in the night we came home... I remember hearing her cry in my sleep, waking up FREEZING cold and shaking like I had the flu. I put on 3 layers of sweats and ran downstairs to proclaim that I thought my milk was coming in. My discharge nurse told me I would possibly feel like I was getting the flu and shake a LOT. She wasn't joking! I also remember having around 300 messages on my phone and not knowing how and when I would respond so instead of napping, I would try to catch up with friends and family. So wild.

Ohhhh oh oh... great story! Monday, the day after we came home from the hospital, I got a crippling UTI. My Mom went to CVS to pick up meds that my amazing doctor called in for me... I had the baby in the kitchen with me while I was chugging water and unsweetened cranberry juice (which is disgusting btw)... I got the sudden urge to pee (bc that's what a UTI does, right?) and BOOM. I peed in my pants. In the kitchen. Holding the baby! No one was home and if I moved, I would drag pee all over the kitchen, family room, etc. So I stayed. And then I ended up peeing in my pants while standing in the kitchen like 3 times before my Mom came back. I am proud to say I didn't shed one tear. I actually hysterically laughed! I was texting with my doctor and he said he was happy to hear I had a good sense of humor and to keep up the good work and feel better! ha!

Brian and I took shifts so we could each get like 4 hours of consecutive sleep. At first, I had a hard time sleeping because I didn't want to be away from the baby but once I was beyond  exhausted, I would pass out the second my head hit the pillow.

I remember this night clear as day, actually. It was midnight and she was WIDE awake. It was my midnight shift haha! She was also like 3 days old and had her days and nights mixed up. I had no idea what I was doing... so amazing that we just figured it all out. I can't believe it, to be honest. So nuts.

I would snuggle her for hours! Literally... all we did was eat and snuggle. She would sleep. I would not.

Ohhhh the diapers! Remember that? I forgot! She would poop like 6 times a day or something insane like that. Thank GOD that has come to an end.

Ohhhh and we would also log every feeding and diaper in our tracking app. That stopped, too! Thank goodness!

Back to being tired. I was SO tired. The most tired I have ever been in my life. I still hadn't pumped so Bri could feed her. (You hear about husbands who aren't really into feeding at night... and the wife complains? Yea, not here. My husband was asking when he could finally feed her!) I had pumped a few times because my supply was so plentiful but I hadn't let her take a bottle yet. So, I had maybe 2-3 oz pumped in a bottle and I needed sleep before I crumbled to my death. Brian was SO excited to finally be able to feed her. So I go upstairs and HYSTERICALLY cry in bed. Like sobbing because I was so terrified she would never latch onto me again. (The new mom fears and anxiety were so real... holy smokes.) 60 SECONDS later... (no joke) I hear Brian at the door and he goes, "Babe? Are you awake? She sucked down that bottle in 30 seconds... I think we need your boobs." I JUMPED out of bed and said, "My babbyyyyy needs me!" hahahaha So so funny. She obviously latched, and since then she's enjoyed her bottles here and there but I just love how much she enjoys nursing. I hate pumping. I think it's such a waste of time for ME... especially since the baby (now 4 months old) is SO efficient at nursing, pumping just isn't my jam. I wish I had a freezer's worth of pumped breast milk but I don't. Oh well. I basically stopped listening to articles and do whatever I feel is right. And I feel like nursing her is 150% the right thing for US. So, it's what we do. My doctor has even told me to let Brian feed her with formula. Nah. I don't want to so I'm not going to. That's my Mom Motto... "Just do." I stopped reading (for the most part) and legit do what I feel is right. I think that a Mom should feed her baby... whatever that may be!!! Exclusive breast? Amazing! Formula only? Beautiful! Pumping? Fantastic! Breast and formula? Wonderful! Honestly... I don't care WHAT any other Mom does and I mean that from the bottom of my heart. Literally. don't. care. This job is hard enough... no need to involve anyone else. With that, no one should really care what I do. ;)

Now, what I have really enjoyed is connecting with women that I haven't spoken to or seen in years and chatting all things "mommy" related. It's been sooooo nice and the support has been helpful and refreshing! When you're in this life of a newborn/infant, ALL YOU THINK ABOUT AND TALK ABOUT IS THE BABY!!! Birth story, funny stories, crazy stories, questions, answers, venting... all about this new baby that is all consuming! (And I love it, btw.) So, if you're reading this and you're my mom friend... THANK YOU! <3

Now, let's move on to weeks 5-8. Those were my hardest weeks. Really, really hard. I wasn't sleeping. I was frustrated. The baby was sleeping beside me in her Halo bassinet, waking SO much. Sometimes, every 2 hours. Brian and I literally hadn't spent any time together. We didn't have our bedroom anymore... and I don't even mean for intimate moments. I mean like... no TV,  no conversations before bed, whispering goodnight, using our phones as flashlights, crap everywhere. Ew. So glad that time is over. During the day, she would nap long stretches... 4 sometimes 5 hours. I couldn't nap. I just couldn't. I did take a shower every day so that was nice. I also blew out my hair often because she loved the sound of the blow dryer. I would prop her on her boppy lounger and she would pass out while I did my hair. Amazing.

We went on an adventure everyday so she slept in her carseat and ended up loving the car, which is great! But man, I was tired. Really tired. She was also fussy. She wasn't colic but she fussed around week 6 and 7. Evening fussiness was rough. Bri would have time with her after work and she basically cried the whole time. It was challenging. I think we both agree that those weeks were the hardest.

Then came her 2 month appt. Her doctor gave us the go ahead to sleep train. (Because she was literally waking me up every 2 hours to nurse for comfort plus we both rocked her to sleep each night.) She was pushing 13 pounds at her 2 month appt and the doctor said she did NOT need to nurse even ONCE at night. Wait, WHAT?!?! So, we did the Ferber Method (read about it here) or google it. There are countless articles about it. Now, "they" whoever "they" are don't recommend sleep training until 6 months but guess who told me to do it? Olivia's DOCTOR. So, I listened anddddd... first night... 8 consecutive hours of sleep!!! And then 3 more after that. It was glorious! Every night got better and better. Also, doc told us to put her in her crib. Yep! So, I listened to that too. She needed space and that space was the beginning of a new chapter in our parenting lives!

Okay, so that takes us to month 3!

Independent sleep, smiles, giggles and learning new things each second of the day! Month 3 was beautiful and each week has only been getting better and better. We have a "routine", she naps (still working on longer naps... the 1st nap is the longest but the rest are around 35-45 mins), and our bedtime routine is SOLID. We bring the baby into our room, lay her on the bed and play and "chat" for about 10 minutes. Then, bath! We sing our bath time song we wrote her (hilarious), fresh diaper, aquaphor massage, fresh jammies. Head to her room, sound machine on, I nurse her, Bri reads a story aloud, he kisses her forehead and shuts the lights. I sing her 2 songs and then sleep sack and crib. Zzz...

We have a lovely daily schedule. Wake up, eat, play, sleep, repeat. We read books, she "helps" me cook, we dance, we play with her rattles and stuffed toys, she swings in her MamaRoo, we sing nursery rhymes. It's really sweet. 3 months was good. Really good!

Remember when I said that all we think about and talk about is the baby? Well, on Feb 29th (the baby was about 14 weeks old) my Mom watched the baby and Brian and I had our 1st date night. And let me tell you something... it was MAGICAL! We went to a salt lounge for salt therapy (could use that again right about NOW), got massages in this 0 gravity massage machines (not just a chair- a legit machine) and then went for a beautiful rodizio dinner. Mmm... steak! We had drinks, we talked, we laughed. It was amazing. We definitely talked about the baby but honestly, we did such a good job talking about adult things. It was lovely.

Another great story... After our spa trip, we went home and got ready for dinner. I came downstairs all done up and Livvy did NOT recognize me. I had a pound of make up on, hair done, no glasses, jewelry. It took her like a whole minute to know it was me. She was soooo confused. hahaha SO FUNNY!

Two days ago, Olivia turned 4 months old.

And I tell you, every single day it gets better and better. I've been told we are in the "golden months" and I see it! She's just this happy, talkative little nugget who loves to play and hang with her Momma and Dadda!

We read, cook and take hikes together! She's my lil bestie! (until we can't be best friends anymore because I gotta be a Mom... but once she's an adult, we can go right back to being best friends!)

We just started solids and that is another element to our little schedule. I can tell these next few months are going to be so so sweet. <3

So here is my conclusion... She is the greatest gift we have ever been blessed with and this is the hardest job I've ever had but I'd never, everrrrr go back!

Thanks for reading!

COVID19 keeping you home? Ideas to keep you busy!!!!

Okay, I am not here to discuss the Corona Virus. I want to focus on mood lifting, therapeutic things we can do while laying low and praying this virus vanishes! I actually just put the baby down for a nap, shut off the news, put my phone aside, opened the deck door and sat down with my MacBook. Since I have been home on maternity leave, my mind is already FILLED with ideas and projects to keep me busy so I figured, why not share them!

Olivia (my 4 month old) and I have a nice routine going on these days. Part of our late afternoon involves running errands... UPS, Target, Homegoods, Lowes, Dunkin', Walmart, Marshalls... ya know, the basic stores in my town. My husband and I sat down last night and made the decision to not bring the baby anywhere... and then also decided to limit going out in public altogether.

So, here we are. Home. Now, for those of you who have never read my blog before I focused ONLY on home decor but I have decided to extend my blogging focus... mom stuff, educational stuff (I am a teacher!) and of course, home stuff. I renamed my blog already and am taking advantage of this time at home to plan SO many new posts. So, please follow along! I find this to be one of the most cathartic things in the WORLD and am always amazed that people read and enjoy my posts.

Now, let's get down to the good stuff! How do we keep busy for the next few weeks?

1. Organize (ANY LITTLE THING!) Here are some visual ideas.

Pantry, junk drawer, coat closet, bedroom closets, any drawer, under the kitchen sink, bathroom toiletries... the list goes on! I'd like to add that you don't need to spend $1.3 million dollars at The Container Store. My bins and containers are from Walmart and Target. If you can't get to the store, Amazon has cheap options.

I am sure our fridges are stocked! Clean them and organize them! I don't have any fancy containers in my fridge but I definitely keep it somewhat organized.

One day this week, I will for sure get in here and sanitize, purge and organize!

2. Clean- Not your regular cleaning. Deep clean. Pull out the couches, move area rugs, rent a steam cleaner (I borrowed my parents steam cleaner and cleaned the sofa in the family room a few weeks ago- DIS-GUST-ING and Ohhhh so rewarding!), vacuum behind your bed and dresser (scary!). Clean heat/AC vents, dust trim and molding, pull out the washer, dryer and fridge. Trust me. This will take hours of your life. You might love it (like me) and you might hate it (like most) but I bet you'll feel good once it's done. Really!

Laundry rooms are sooooo dusty! Get in there, move your appliances and clean!

3. Purge- Get rid of all your crap. I have been doing a little every week and dayyyyum, it feels good.

Our kitchen utensil drawer had SO MUCH unnecessary stuff. Literally, it was OVER flowing with crap. I emptied the entire drawer and made two piles. Keep and toss.

When purging, you can either throw it all away (sad), donate (amazing!) or sell it if it's in good shape (ohhh yea!) I use Let Go and Facebook Marketplace to sell. Have made good cash selling, too!

Clothes, shoes, belts... get rid of things you don't wear anymore! Buh-bye.

4. Cook and bake! Who knows... you might love it!

5. Self Care- relax, read, mani/pedi, nap... ya know!

6. GO OUTSIDE- I went outside to weed and do a spring clean up in our flower beds and it felt AMAZING! I generally don't LOVE weeding and stuff but for whatever reason, this felt so great. This is a perfect example of how an activity that you normally might not love to do can still make you FEEL good.

7. Laundry? I know, I know... but honestly, it feels SO GOOD to be caught up on laundry. SO GOOD! I hate nothing more than folding laundry but it's much less painful to fold 1 load a day verses folding 8 loads on a precious Saturday morning. Barf.

8. Technology clean up- This one is sooo time consuming and I need to do it desperately! Emails, photos, texts... they take up so much space. I have WAY too many photos on my camera roll and some of them are ridiculous. Do I really need a picture of my manicure from 2015? That's a hard NO! Then my phone pics get "iCloud-ed" to my Mac and then I have these ridiculous photos in 2 places when they shouldn't even be in ONE. So, technology clean up!

Don't do 50 things a day, either. Spread them out. I have learned to slow down a little and take in moments of my day vs. being a lunatic and doing hundreds of chores all within 5 hours.

Hope this list helps! Feel free to add more ideas in the comments section. Stop by for MUCH more home, mama and educational content coming soon!! Thanks for reading and supporting.

Powder Room refresh for under $100

Hey all! I JUST finished a little powder room refresh and I'm so excited to share it!

How did this project start, you ask? Well, I was walking by the powder room and realized the lighting above the sink was, ummm, not cute. Then, I looked around the tiny powder room and thought... "Hmmmm, this room isn't that cute at ALL." So, off to Lowes I went, followed by TJ Maxx and Michaels.

So, this transformation kind of just happened. No joke. I had NO plan. The only thing I knew was that I wanted a new light fixture. So, I found this light fixture from Lowes for just under $50. Couldn't find the exact bulbs but here is the brand and the style- my bulbs are much more round. GE Relax LED bulbs

Light bulbs- $8.98 for a pack of 2
Vanity Light Fixture- $49.98

Ohhhh yea... want to see a before?

I haven't touched this room since we moved in. Hung that cute little canvas on the wall and called it a day.

After I picked up the new light fixture, my wheels started turning. I knew I wanted to do this entire refresh for under $100. I went on a hunt to find some kind of shelf unit for above the toilet but no luck. I found some cute ones from TJMaxx and Michaels... Since I had roughly $30 left in my budget (after light and bulbs) all options would exhaust the budget. I almost gave up until... right by the check out line in Michaels, I came across this white, wooden crate. I thought to myself, "Self, couldn't I hang this on the wall from the bottom and turn it into a shelf?" Promptly after my thinking, I googled "milk crate shelf" and boom. It's a thing. This crate was $10.

I decorated the crate with a little basket and tiny mason jar from Michaels. The books and greenery were things I had around the house. Stuffed the basket with 2 wash cloths.
Basket- $3(ish)
Mason jar- $2(wish)
Only thing left to get is a new hand towel. I also thought about spray painting the towel holder a matte black... but we'll see. ;)

Thanks for stopping by!

A cozy, winter bedroom

This crazzzzy weekend snow storm (eye roll) had me craving a cozy bedroom! I spent the better part of Sunday deep cleaning our master and boy oh boy, did it feel good! After placing the last of the throw pillows on the bed, I sat back and realized how pleased I am with our bedroom these days.

So, our master has kindaaaaaa been neglected. (I'm being a tad dramatic.) But if I think about the time and energy I have spent on other parts of the house in the last 5 years, I guess neglected isn't really too far off.

Over the years, I've been able to pull a look together in the master but I was never really in love with the decor. A few weeks ago, I ordered that pom pom throw blanket (pictured above) from Macys. <--- I linked the blanket but grey is no longer available. And thennnn, I found THE perfect, over-sized, full length mirror. I had been searching for the "right" one for months and then BOOM. There she was, in Homegoods, just waiting for me to take er home.
I always set these "rules" in my head when I am searching for something I "need" like this mirror. Well, my "rule" was to spend under $100 and I found this beauty for $80... PLUS I had a $20 gift card! WINNINGGGG!

I will let pictures do the talking from here on out and list sources at the bottom!

Master Bedroom sources:

headboard- Ashley Furniture
Euro shams- Homegoods
throw pillows- Homegoods
mirrored bedside chest- Homegoods
lamps- Homegoods
curtains- Homegoods

gallery wall pieces- Target, TJ Maxx, Homegoods, Michaels

If I missed anything, leave a comment below! I'd love to share!

Home updates that won't break the bank!

I am notorious for wanting to change everything! (ALL the time!) There is just something about freshening up a space that makes me SO happy but........ sometimes these grand ideas I conjure up in my head are too expensive. So what do we do? Well, allow me to tell you!!!

I love lists and lately, I've been writing lists of small things I can do around the house to amp it up. Ya know, next level ish. So, here is my first list of 5 budget friendly updates for your home. (I have more lists to share in the near future)

1. Replace builder grade lighting.
I was sitting on the sofa a few months ago and I noticed our front entrance light fixture. I knew it was there (obviously) and knew what it looked like but I never really processed just how ugly it truly was... especially as entrance lighting. So, I made sure Brian was down (because he would be the one to install it ;) and went on a search to find something under $100, a mix between silver and gold AND no glass case (because I did NOT want to clean/dust the glass on the fixture once a month) Here is a link to the one I found from Joss and Main and it hit each of my 3 non-negotiables.
Thorne 2-Light Metal Flush Mount in White Gold. It was on sale for $98 when I purchased.

Brian picked up these light bulbs from Lowes which I LOVE!!!!
GE Vintage 60-Watt EQ Amber Dimmable Light Bulb

New fixture close up w/bulbs:

Before: Blah!

After: YES!

2. Paint!
I hid from this idea for YEARS until I just dove right in this summer. Rather than get all wordy, pictures do the best explaining for this one.

Kitchen Before/After:

Basement Stairs Before/After:

Need I say more? Nope.

Paint ranges in price but it's obviously cheaper than renovations, new furniture or replacing items (cabinets, etc) altogether.

3. Replace Hardware.
Swapping out cabinet knobs and door knobs/handles makes a HUGE difference.

Okay, this is wild right here. This first picture (below) was taken a few months after moving in. I know... the kitchen looks horrific BUT I want you to pay close attention to the hardware on the cabinets. YES! Those are SILVER knobs. SIL-VER. I don't know why and I don't know how but that's what we inherited. So, I replaced them with black knobs and replaced the pantry door with a black handle. The POP with the black hardware makes SUCH a difference. (also, how in the heck did I live with this dark paint for 5 years? I'll never understand it!)

Hardware from Amazon:
Door Handle

*I sold every silver knob (using Facebook Marketplace) for $25 and ended up only paying $5 for my new knobs. Yep. I know. Amazing!

I'm also famous for changing knobs on dressers, coffee tables, vanities, end tables and dining room servers. (I replaced all of the knobs on my furniture!) You can go to Hobby Lobby and find millions of knobs and pulls to replace the generic ones.

4. Crown Moulding
This is yet to come... the plan is for sometime before spring. But it adds SUCH character to a space. I am planning on using the same moulding my parents used in their home. Here are a few pictures.

Crown really completes a room. I physically can't WAIT. I am going to see how much the materials cost. Labor is soooo competitive since we are using the same guys that did our basement but the downstairs rooms are my main target priority right now.

5. Spruce up front porch
The first thing someone sees when they visit your home is the front entrance. Some simple things you can do to spruce up your home are:

-paint the front door
-add a simple plaque with your street address to your siding
-add some faux boxwood topiaries
-use seasonal florals/items
-hang an American flag (or whatever flag you'd like)

If you zoom in, you can see the metal plaque under the first window on the right which has our street address. I think it's such a nice touch! Brian hung the American flag this year and I simply love it. I LOVE the USA (and I also love red, white and blue).

This year's Fall porch was my favorite. Ever. I didn't buy one regular pumpkin... only "fantasy" pumpkins and "ugly" pumpkins which were absolutely gorgeous. Never going back!!!

I am planning on buying a tall faux boxwood topiary from the At Home Store to put next to the door. I LOVE how that looks! This isn't the exact one I saw. It was $60 and MUCH taller. As soon as the weather gets more mild, I am pulling the trigger.
